All around our society, we can see the fury of the day with people multitasking and rushing from one point to the other, talking on their cell phones as they walk and eat, driving recklessly while writing notes or reading the paper, rambling and making no sense when they talk assuming others can understand their thoughts, using drive thru for lunch and dinners/dry cleaners/medications/or even for a drink of water.
When I sit back to sketch and to study society, I focus on the details on those individuals in motion, their extremities as well as those special features that are so distinguished and very proper such as the facial features, expressions or even exaggerated features. As people are moving around in full force, I am able to capture some of those special details which I see such as gestures, forms, smiles or even disfigurement and that is what you will see in my painting, the moving portraits and "non"-still life of our modern day society.
That rushing energy has produced a choreography closely resembling the machines in a factory, constantly moving and producing a specific function. Like those machines, I see our society without a clear vision and as I stand there in front of the primed canvas and ready to paint, I too become equally as mechanical as life, caught up in the rush of the motion all around and trying to let out those details which I have witness, that energy which have bottled and need to let out. Like those machines, I am all over the canvas applying marks of paint, pencils/ink, crayons, oil sticks with both sides of the brushes, stick, tools, my bare hands or directly from the tubes in a non-stop motion.
If you where to sit back and start to sketch or paint someone who does not stand motionless, you would notice that you do not have the time to focus on the details and paint that perfect portrait. However, I only select very distinguished details and focused on juxtaposing the details from one person atop another and so on. The outcome of my painting is a motion filled painting with images that appear as if they are moving and unclear. This also happens with photography, if you moved while taking a picture, the image will develop into a blurry almost non-distinguished image--Impressionistic.
"My art is not about anger or rage but rather the energy of life, the vibrancy of the excitement, the non-stop action of life. My art tells a story of how I see life today, how short on time we are, how we need to be on the move at all times, the confusion we get caught up in".
